Lake Mead National Recreation Area
Lake Mead which lies on the Nevada/Arizona boarder was formed out of the Colorado River and held back by the Hoover Dam. The Dam was completed in 1935 and stands as a monument to the New Deal engineering out of the Depression. On July 21, 1948, c.a. 12:30 pm after a high altitude (30,000 ft.) run the plane makes a low level (c.a. 100-200 ft.) pass over Lake Mead. Because the lake was completely smooth, the pilot misjudged the height over water and the plane hit the lake at 230 mph. The Plane skipped back into the air and continued flying for approximately ¼ mile before crashing into the lake.
