sweden 2019
For three weeks in the fall of 2019 the royal warship Gribshunden from 1495 was excavated on the seabed of the Baltic Sea off the coast of southern Sweden. I was part of a PBS NOVA production team focusing on documenting the site with photogrammetry to create virtual excavations. Gribshunden is considered the world's best-preserved ship from the early periods of global exploration similar to what Christopher Columbus used for his expeditions to America.
Gribshunden was a warship that belonged to the Danish king John, and sank off the coast of southern Sweden after a fire on board in the summer of 1495. It was discovered by divers in the 1970s, and in 2015 the wreck's world unique figurehead—a dog-like monster—was salvaged.
